App Inspired Halloween Costumes: Jetpack Joyride & Fruit Ninja

The twins were back and forth for weeks on what to be for Halloween this year, but with the help of their three older siblings they finally decided on a couple App inspired costumes earlier this week.  They drew inspiration from two favorite apps coincidentally made by the same developer, Halfbrick.  Cormac is going as "Jetpack Joyride" and Declan is going as "Fruit Ninja".

Keep reading for some simple DIY instructions:

The Jetpack Joyride App Costume:

The key part to the Jetpack Joyride costume is, of course, the jetpack.  You'll also need a business shirt, disheveled tie and some rumpled up business style pants.  You could go all out with a torn suit coat too, but we decided that was too many layers for our little dude.

Making the Jetpack:
Those of you familiar with the app play know that their our several jetpacks to choose and as you may have guessed from our choice in strap color, Cormac's favorite is the rainbow jetpack.  To assemble the jetpack you'll need ...  scissors, 2 large empty plastic bottles, silver coin colored duck tape, a couple yards of thick ribbon for use as straps, a piece of cardboard such as the one we used from our cereal box, and some yellow and orange felt.  I simply duck taped the straps to the cardboard (backpack style), wrapping the entire board in the process.  I then wrapped each bottle in the silver duck tape and finished each bottle off by taping flame shaped chunks of the orange and yellow felt in the openings.  Finally, I taped the bottles upside down on to the cardboard sheet already fitted with straps.

The Fruit Ninja App Costume

The Fruit Ninja Costume required a more subjective approach.  We decided few people easily recognize the Ninja himself.  Fruit Ninja app play is more about the act of  fruit chopping.  To further complicate things, a ninja sword was not an option for a costume being worn to school.  Our little ninja skillfully takes on fruit with only the use of his bare hands.

Making the Ninja Costume:
You'll need plain black pants and a black shirt, a couple yards of fruit fabric, fake fruit, and a means of attaching the fruit to the clothing.  I purchased light styrofoam fruit from the local Dollar Tree and sewed the fruit on with a needle and black thread.  I preferred this method as the fruit can easily be removed again without harming the apparel.  However if you are a strict "no sew" type, a hot glue gun, fabric glue, or even super glue would work too; but you'll be unable to reuse the items later.

As finishing touches I simply cut, tri-folded, and ironed the fruit fabrics to make a ninja headband and sash.  My favorite fabric is the watermelon one I found an JoAnn Fabrics.
